Wildlife
Botswana is a unique African destination: an unusual combination of desert and delta that draws an immense concentration of wildlife to its complex of wetlands in the winter and a dazzling array of birdlife during the summer.
It is also wild, pristine and expansive. Thirty-nine percent of the country is protected in some form or another, including almost the entire northern third of the country, and its national parks and reserves provide a safe haven for some 85 species of mammal and over 1075 species of bird.
Okavango Delta
From the outstretched hand of the Okavango Delta, Botswana’s wilderness stretches in every direction. In the remote northwest, the Kwando, Linyanti and Selinda concessions offer opportunities to explore untouched wilderness off the beaten track. Access to these 3 areas is by air, from either Maun or Kasane.
The opportunity of viewing a dazzling array of animals at home in some of Africa’s most unspoilt environments is the main reason for visiting Botswana for most people. The Big Five – lion, leopard, elephant, black rhino and buffalo.
"Experience Botswana with Big Foot Tours"
Discover one of the most breathtaking contrasts on earth amidst this sprawling wilderness, where the arid desert of the Kalahari gives way to the miracle of the Okavango Delta. This is wild Africa, and your pioneering spirit will soar as you explore off the beaten track to experience the true African safari.
In the heart of Botswana, the floodwaters of the Okavango River spill out over the Kalahari desert sands, creating a 15 000 square km water wonderland – the largest inland river delta in the world.
This fan-shaped jewel gives life to Botswana’s arid interior, with its mosaic of channels and islands forested with palms and its floodplains teeming with wildlife. Here, fish and birds, hippo and crocodiles, co-exist with herds of zebra and buffalo, elephant, lion and the wild dog. This biodiversity enables the Okavango Delta to offer remarkable land and water experiences.
